The short version

Plain language summary

WordSensei is a free vocabulary game. We collect the minimum data needed to run the platform: your account info, game progress, and some analytics. We run ads to keep the service free. We do not sell your personal data to third parties. If you're under 13, you need a parent or guardian to create an account.

This policy covers all visitors to wordsensei.com and anyone who creates a WordSensei account. By using WordSensei, you agree to the practices described here. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

WordSensei is operated by the WordSensei team. When this policy says "we," "us," or "our," it means WordSensei.

What we collect

We collect data in three ways: directly from you, automatically when you use the site, and through third-party services we use to run the platform.

Data type What it includes Why we collect it
Account info First name, last name, email address To create and manage your account
Google sign-in Name, email, and profile picture from Google To let you sign in without a password
Game data Scores, streaks, word history, accuracy, session times To show your progress and personalise your experience
Usage analytics Pages visited, clicks, session duration, browser type, device, general location To understand how people use the site and improve it
Technical data IP address, referral source, cookies To keep the service running and detect fraud
Referral codes The code used to sign up (if any) To credit referrals and give bonus XP
Google sign-in

When you sign in with Google, we receive only the data Google shares: your name, email address, and profile picture. We don't receive your Google password or any other Google account data. You can revoke access to WordSensei at any time through your Google account settings.

How we use your data

We use your data to run WordSensei, improve the experience, and keep the platform free through advertising.

  • Create and manage your account so you can log in and access your progress across devices
  • Track your streaks, scores, and word history so you can see how you're improving
  • Personalise the game experience based on your performance and vocabulary level
  • Run Google Analytics so we can understand which parts of the site people use most
  • Serve ads through our advertising partners to keep the platform free
  • Send account-related emails like password resets or important policy updates
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security issues
  • Process referral codes and award bonus XP correctly

We don't use your data to build psychological profiles, make automated decisions that affect you in a significant way, or send unsolicited marketing without your consent.

How advertising works on WordSensei

WordSensei is free to use. Advertising is how we keep it that way. Ads on WordSensei are delivered by third-party ad networks, which may include Google and other partners.

What this means for you

Ad networks may place cookies on your device to show you ads that are relevant to your interests, including ads on other websites after you visit WordSensei. This is called remarketing. We don't control the specific ads that appear, but we do limit ad categories that are inappropriate for a learning platform.

Ad networks we work with may collect your IP address, browser information, and browsing activity across sites to serve targeted ads. Their use of your data is governed by their own privacy policies, not ours.

Children's privacy

This section is important. Please read it.

WordSensei is designed to be safe for students of all ages. We take children's privacy seriously and follow applicable laws including COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) in the United States.

Children under 13 may not create a WordSensei account without verifiable parental consent. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian to create an account for you or to provide consent before you register.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has created an account without your knowledge, please contact us at contact.wordsensei@gmail.com and we will promptly delete the account and all associated data.

For users aged 13 to 17, we recommend a parent or guardian review this privacy policy with them. We limit the data we collect from younger users and do not serve behaviourally targeted advertising to users who identify as minors.

Sharing your data

We don't sell your personal data. We share it only in the following cases.

Who What we share Why
Google Analytics Usage data, device info, general location To analyse site traffic and improve the product
Google (sign-in) Authentication tokens To verify your identity when you use Google sign-in
Ad networks Cookies, IP address, page visit data To serve ads that keep WordSensei free
Hosting & infrastructure All data processed on our servers To store and serve the platform
Law enforcement What is legally required To comply with valid legal requests

If WordSensei is ever acquired or merged with another company, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction. We'll notify you before that happens and before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when our practices change. When we do, we update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we'll notify you by email or by showing a notice on the site when you log in next.

Continuing to use WordSensei after a policy update means you accept the revised terms. If you don't agree with the changes, you can delete your account before they take effect.
